The Ontario Municipal Board’s decision on the Viner family’s proposal for a for-profit student residence on Laurier Avenue East was announced this week, in favour of the proposal.

The issue before the OMB has been whether to allow the demolition of five buildings of historic interest to build a nine-storey complex on the one-acre site. Action Sandy Hill put in a strong showing in opposition to the proposal, saying that it would be entirely inconsistent with the Sandy Hill Secondary Plan and completely out of scale with its neighbours. “The entire heritage character of Laurier Avenue East – arguably one of the most important historical streets in Ottawa – would be permanently altered”. This view had been supported by the Mayor and the majority of City Council in March 2014 who overruled Planning Committee’s earlier approval.
ASH’s legal expenses were generously supported by many donors to ASH’s “Save Sandy Hill” fund, created to fight all inappropriate development in Sandy Hill.

La décision de la Commission des Affaires Municipales de l’Ontario (CAMO) dans la proposition de la famille Viner pour une résidence étudiante privée, avenue Laurier Est, a été déposée cette semaine, en faveur de la proposition.
Voici la Déclaration d’ACS sur la décision
La question devant la CAMO était d’autoriser la démolition de cinq bâtiments d’intérêt historique pour construire un complexe de neuf étages sur le site d’un acre. Action Côte-de-Sable s’est fortement opposé à la proposition, affirmant qu’elle était tout à fait incompatible avec le Plan Secondaire de la Côte-de-Sable et complètement hors d’échelle avec ses voisins. “L’ensemble du caractère patrimonial de l’avenue Laurier Est – sans doute l’une des plus importantes rues historiques d’Ottawa – serait modifié de façon permanente”. Ce point de vue a été appuyé par le maire et la majorité du Conseil municipal en mars 2014 qui avait alors refusé l’approbation antérieure de Comité de Planification.
Les frais juridiques d’ACS ont été généreusement soutenus par de nombreux donateurs à la campagne “Save Sandy Hill”, créée pour lutter contre tout développement inapproprié dans la Côte-de-Sable.
