Events and shows taking place in or near Sandy Hill

Every Friday night – Ottawa Swing Dance Society at Bate Hall (All Saints’ Church at Chapel and Laurier East); lessons 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m., followed by dance from 9.30 p.m.-12.30 a.m.. Admission is $5 for the lesson and the whole evening but $10 for live band nights. All Saints’ has purchased two air conditioners, so that the windows can be closed at 11:00pm to ensure by-law compliance. Everyone is welcome. Call Collin for more details - 613-295-3650

 

Dec. 10 –Write for Rights The staff and members of Amnesty International Canada invite everyone to join us in celebrating International Human Rights Day at our national office. As well as writing LOTS of letters, it’s an opportunity to meet other people in Ottawa who are actively working for human rights. There will be food, hot drinks, and light refreshments, musical entertainment, and speakers on some of this year’s featured actions. Time: 4-8pm Location: 312 Laurier Ave. E.

Dec. 11 – The Stairwell Carollers bring focus to the true meaning of Christmas, with their beautiful and unique interpretations of traditional carols in many languages. 7:30 p.m., St. Paul’s Eastern United Church, Cumberland at Daly. Dec. 12 – Capital Chamber Choir; mezzo-soprano Sandra Graham joins the newly-founded choir, to present Imant Raminsh’s Magnificat and Ave Maria, and a variety of seasonal works by Canadian composers and arrangers. Dec. 13 – What are the bells ringing for? The All Saints bells will ring 350 times by 3 p.m., part of a global bell ringing action coinciding with an ecumenical service at the height of the climate change talks in Copenhagen. According to climate experts, 350 parts per million is the upper limit for CO2 concentration in our atmosphere—right now it stands at 390 ppm.

 

A Holiday Helping of Music Soup staring Juno Award winning artist Jen Gould, two shows at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., suitable for children ages two to six (with adult accompaniment), $15 and a can of soup (donated to the Ottawa Food Bank), Arts Court Theatre stage, 613 564-7240.
